Band Spotlight: Salem Lake

Bio:From across the Carolinas, Salem Lake met at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Studying their instruments at the time, they found creating their own music to be on the back burner. After splitting different ways to continue music in college, each member ran into difficulties. They ended up leaving music school and were faced with a monumental decision; take the conventional path and go back to continue their education… or do what they already lived for and create innovative blends of sound and lyrics that are relevant to the times. Luke Nystrom [Bass/Vocals] was born and raised in NC, but didn't truly grow up until attending high school with other Salem Lake members; Jeff, Caleb and Ethan. While attending arts school, he developed a passion for collaborating with other musicians in styles from classical and jazz, all the way to hip hop and rock. In his free time, Luke enjoys drinking ridiculous amounts of coffee and feeding Sky (Jeff's husky) chips while Jeff's not looking. Luke loves Salem Lake because of the beautiful music they play and the beautiful places they see... and maybe even the beautiful people they play for. ;) Caleb Hoffman [Keyboard/Acoustic Guitar/Lead Vocals] is from Charlotte, NC and has a passion for teaching, longboarding, jamming with friends, and spices such as Italian Herb. He attended school at UNC School of the Arts from 2007-2011 studying drums and percussion under John R. Beck. From musicals and contemporary music, to jazz and classical music, Caleb has experienced and enjoyed many different types of music. In 2011, he launched a solo acoustic project where he wrote many original songs and worked for Jimmy Johns where he delivered many tasty sandwiches to the UNC Charlotte area. He now lives with his friends/bandmates in Indian Trail, where they have lots of exciting adventures all over the east coast. Jeff Coward [Electric Guitar/ Lead Vocals] is a songwriter who grew up in Columbia, South Carolina. He left his hometown in 2008 to study the classic guitar at the UNC School of the Arts. After deciding to break from college for a while, he focused on writing his own music, taking on students, and becoming a certified bartender. Now he kills time skateboarding, taking Krav Maga, and being a full time guitar instructor/ member of Salem Lake. As absorbed as he is in being a musician, he takes impulsive trips out of town and also enjoys surfing and camping with his Siberian Husky Sky. Ethan Evoniuk [Drummer], from Durham, NC, enjoys longboarding, making beats and consuming large plates of bacon. He has studied percussion at University of North Carolina School of the Arts, San Francisco Conservatory of Music and has certification for Swedish Massage from San Francisco School of Massage and Bodywork. He has since moved back to his home state to make magical music with his friends and live life to the fullest. Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/SalemLakeMusic?fref=ts
